AI or Not?

I don’t know why I’m writing this.

Well.

I do know why. What is this AI or Artificial Intelligence? Why does it creep me out? Can we know the truth about it? Is it something useful, like the internet has been? People didn’t like the internet back then, either!

Robert Metcalfe, in InfoWorld, 1995:

“I predict the Internet will soon go spectacularly supernova and in 1996 catastrophically collapse.”

I’m using the internet right now to write this—what, twenty years later? Thirty!!!

What do I do with AI? Will I use it? Will some demon invade my computer and rise up to eat me if I engage with it? Will we as humans become the fat, lazy characters in the movie Wall-E, letting the corporate “AI” run our world, as we stare at screens and drink our smoothies?

Right?

It’s time for me to dig in and decide for myself.
